New PZI / WORM Screening Series
This is the first of a series of monthly PZI screening at WORM. Whenever possible the filmmakers will be present and screenings will followed by a Q&A, moderated by Master Media Design & Communications Course Director Simon Pummell.

“‘sleep furiously’ is set in a small farming community in mid Wales, a place where Koppel’s parents – both refugees – found a home. This is a landscape and population that is changing rapidly as small scale agriculture is disappearing and the generation who inhabited a premechanised world is dying out. Much influenced by his conversations with the writer Peter Handke, the film maker leads us on a poetic and profound journey into a world of endings and beginnings; a world of stuffed owls, sheep and fire.

Koppel’s vision sets man in his true context, as a part of creation and not lord over it. He has spoken of his admiration for W.G. Sebald, and sleep furiously is in the line of that new kind of post-humanist but entirely humane art of which Sebald was a leading practitioner before his untimely death in 2001. Now more than ever we need films such as this: grave, measured, subtly comic and beautifully wrought, free of polemic and yet offering a new way of seeing that is as old as Arcady. ‘sleep furiously’ is, simply, a masterpiece.” — John Banville

Gideon Koppel was a postgraduate student at The Slade School of Fine Art. His work as a film maker and artist has been broadcast worldwide and exhibited in galleries  from The Tate Modern in London to MoMA in New York. He is Professor of Film at Aberystwyth University and an Associate Fellow at Green Templeton College, University of Oxford. His work moves between moving and still images:  he is currently photographing (and listening) to the landscape of North Holland as the preliminary steps of a new research project.
