On the occasion of celebrating the future collaboration of Het Nieuwe Instituut and MIARD, Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam please join us for our initial event:
Marina Otero Verzier, Alex Suárez and Füsun Türetken in conversation with Kirsten Algera from Mac Guffin, Anna Puigjaner from Quaderns, Ethel Baraona Pohl from Quaderns and dpr-barcelona, and Micha Zweifel and Yin Yin Wong from Publication Studio, students and guests.
Apocalyptic prophecies of the effect of online publications on print media and the loss of the physical book have gradually been silenced. In reality, we see how the strict distinction between both print and online platforms have become porous. The digital revolution has spawned a new generation of small and agile publishers who virtuously use both media spaces and attempt to transform how interior architecture and design are presented. In addition, the complex economical landscape in which magazines and publishers find themselves, demand for experiments and innovative strategies to survive. It is in this moment of turn in publishing that we can see an extension of limited notions of publishing in the realm of interior architecture and architecture. In order to explore these concepts, diverse publishers will form the center of our debate. We will propose forms of survival, resistance and complexity in order to understand the nature of publishing today, where one can see electronic self-publishing as a new way and platform to get into the writing and magazine game. Further, we will address the hybrid or third way of (electronic) self-publishing and working with the publishing establishment and last but not least the lack of peer-review journals in architecture, design and interior architecture.
Short Bios:
Kirsten Algera is Editor-in-Chief of Mac Guffin, a design and crafts magazine. Each biannual edition takes an object and explores the manifold stories it generates.
Ethel Baraona Pohl is a writer, critic and curator, but she prefers the term professional amateur. Her [net]work is a real hub linking several publications and stakeholders in architecture and theory. She is co-founder of the independent research practice and publishing house dpr-barcelona, and editor at Quaderns d’arquitectura i urbanisme.
Marina Otero Verzier is an architect based in Rotterdam. She is Head of Research & Development at Het Nieuwe Instituut, and chief curator of OAT2016 together with the After Belonging Agency. Previously, Otero was Director of Global Network Programming at Studio-X, and Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University GSAPP. She is a Ph.D. candidate at ETSA Madrid.
Publication Studio Rotterdam: is the newest studio in an international network that designs, prints, binds, publishes, and sells original books with artists and writers from around the world. All the work is done in-house, on Het Nieuwe Instituut’s Deck. A work space and meeting place for everyone interested in books and book making. Publication Studio Rotterdam is run by Yin Yin Wong and Micha Zweifel.
Anna Puigjaner is a PhD architect, researcher and editor. Co-founder of MAIO, she is member of the research group Habitar at ETSAB – UPC. She is currently in charge of running the magazine Quaderns d’Arquitectura i Urbanisme and teaching at the Barcelona School of Architecture ETSAB/ETSAV – UPC and Massana School of Design.
Alex Suárez is an architect and educator. He is Program Director of MIARD at the Piet Zwart Institute and graduation project advisor at Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam University. He works on design projects via SpaceOperaForm, earned his Master of Architecture from UCLA and was born in Cuba.
Füsun Türetken is an architect and writer. She is lecturer at [MIARD], Piet Zwart Institute and Head of Visual Culture at Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam University. She runs Studio features (Studio ft.), a platform that intervenes with contemporary conditions of knowledge production and supports critical, collaborative artistic research and work (of others). Türetken is a PhD candidate at ‘Research Architecture’, Visual Culture, Goldsmiths University London. She is a fellow with Het Nieuwe Instituut Rotterdam 2016.
