First year students at the MIARD programme will present new full-scale design work created during our current thematic design project Altered.Appliances for exhibition at Ventura Lambrate 2013, during the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan.

Thematic Design Project: Altered.Appliances

 Building upon the 2012 thematic project, research by making, and exhibition, named FABRIKAAT, which was shown at Ventura Lambrate 2012 during Milan Design Week, this year the project focuses on the domestic kitchen as the most technological, equipment-laden and factory-like room of the home.

We intend to use the kitchen as an inspiration for the project on two fronts. First, students will research historical examples of appliances/apparatus, particularly low-tech, hand powered devices. Secondly, the final application for the projects will somehow be related to the kitchen. Students will become experts in their particular appliance, use and effect to be able to extract the design parameters and techniques of fabrication method to use in their own projects and explore new 'altered' uses and design opportunities.

Final Application: The domestic kitchen

Develop a 'low tech' device/altered machine.

The appliance’s application can address but not be limited to one of the following kitchen tasks:

• Storing
• Producing
• Cooking
• Eating
• Cleaning
• Waste

Exhibition: 'LIVE DEMO'

The final exhibition of the projects will be staged as a 'live demonstration' of the altered machines and appliances the students/designers create. The students will have the machine working throughout the exhibit so that the exhibition takes the feeling of performance. The users will experience, see and be informed about the process and results of the appliances and new their new use.
